cPanel VPS vs Shared Hosting: When It Is Time to Move to Your Own VPS
A cPanel VPS gives you your own server and your own licence bill. How to tell when that trade is worth it.
Stay on shared hosting while your sites fit comfortably inside its limits. Move to a cPanel VPS when you hit those limits regularly, when you need software or settings a shared server will not allow, or when you are hosting client sites and want your own WHM. The main costs of the move are the cPanel licence and the administration that comes with root access. VPSWala sells the VPS side of this comparison, not shared hosting.
What actually changes
| Dimension | Shared hosting | cPanel VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Resources | Shared with other accounts on the server, capped per account | Your own vCPU, memory and NVMe allocation |
| Control | cPanel only, no root | WHM and root: PHP versions, modules, firewall, services |
| Isolation | Account-level on a shared operating system | Your own virtual machine and kernel |
| Licence | Included in the hosting price | cPanel licence per account tier, quoted separately |
| Administration | Provider patches the server | You patch and secure the server unless you buy management |
Signals that you have outgrown shared hosting
- Resource limit warnings or throttled PHP processes during normal traffic.
- You need a PHP extension, a background process or a server setting the host will not enable.
- You host many client sites and want separate cPanel accounts under your own WHM.
- A neighbour on the shared server affects your site's performance or email reputation.
The minimum sensible cPanel VPS
cPanel is comparatively heavy. VPSWala's cPanel VPS page notes that it wants roughly 2 GB before the first customer logs in, and recommends starting at 4 vCPU and 8 GB:
| If you are running | Start at | Specification | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to about 20 small accounts | VPS 8 | 4 vCPU / 8 GB / 80 GB NVMe | ₹1,438 |
| 50 to 100 accounts | VPS 32 | 12 vCPU / 32 GB / 320 GB NVMe | ₹4,799 |
| Reseller business at scale | VPS 64 | 24 vCPU / 64 GB / 640 GB NVMe | ₹9,599 |
Prices cover the server only. The cPanel licence is priced per account tier and is often the largest line on a small hosting bill, so price it first.
The hidden work
- Backups: cPanel's backup writing to the same disk is not a backup. Send copies off the server and test restores.
- Security: keep cPanel and the operating system updated, and use a firewall.
- Email: sending reputation becomes your job. Set SPF, DKIM and DMARC for every domain.
Moving accounts
cPanel's Transfer Tool in WHM can copy accounts from another cPanel server, including files, databases and email. Lower DNS TTLs a day ahead, transfer, test, then switch DNS.
VPSWala plans are unmanaged unless you agree otherwise in writing: the host platform, network and provisioning are VPSWala's job, and everything inside the VM is yours. Per the terms of service, off-server backups, control-panel licences, Windows licensing, managed administration and extra IPv4 addresses are quoted separately, and any availability commitment applies only where it is written into your quotation or agreement.
A cost comparison you can do yourself
Add up what you pay today for shared hosting, including any add-ons. Then add three lines for the VPS: the server itself (VPS 8 is ₹1,438 per month, excluding GST), the cPanel licence for your account tier, and your own time or a managed-services contract for patching, monitoring and backups. If the total is higher, the move needs to buy you something concrete: fewer limits, more control, or the ability to resell hosting to clients.
Moving without surprises
- Price the cPanel licence tier before ordering the server.
- Lower DNS TTLs at least a day before the move.
- Transfer accounts, test each site on the new server using a hosts-file override, then switch DNS.
- Keep the old hosting for a week in case something was missed.

When shared hosting is still the right answer
If you run a handful of brochure sites or a small WordPress blog, traffic is modest, and nobody on the team wants to patch a server, shared hosting remains the simpler and cheaper choice. A VPS earns its cost when control, isolation or resale matters to you.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cPanel licence included?
No. It is quoted separately from the VPS.
Is there a free alternative?
Yes, several free control panels exist. The trade is familiarity: many clients already know cPanel.
Should I go straight to a dedicated server?
Rarely. A correctly sized VPS covers most reseller and agency needs. Compare against dedicated hardware on licensing and sustained load.
